Monitoring with tcpdump IEPM (Internet End-to-end Performance Monitoring) group at SLAC (Stanford Linear Accelerator Center), Stanford University and Department of Energy (DOE). PingER (Ping End-to-end Reporting) is the name given to the Internet End-to-end Performance Measurement (IEPM) project to monitor end-to-end performance of between Internet hosts. It is led by SLAC. The project now involves measurements from about 40 Measurement Agents in 14 countries to about 700 sites in over 160 countries. The active (ie intrusive) performance monitoring conducted by PingER and other monitoring projects at SLAC would be well complemented with an understanding of passive monitoring, that is genuine user traffic as it comes in and goes out of the SLAC DMZ. This report details an investigation of the TCPDUMP utility.
