Google Search Engine Optimization Starter Guide This document first began as an effort to help teams within Google, but we thought it'd be just as useful to webmasters that are new to the topic of search engine optimization and wish to improve their sites' interaction with both users and search engines. SEO is an acronym for "search engine optimization" or "search engine optimizer. Although this guide won't tell you any secrets that'll automatically rank your site first for queries in Google, following the best practices outlined below will make it easier for search engines to crawl, index and understand your content. As stated in Wikipedia: "the order of search results on Google's search-results pages is based, in part, on a priority rank called a "PageRank". Google, over the years, has added many other secret criteria for determining the ranking of pages on result lists, reported to be over 200 different indicators. The specifics of which are kept secret to keep spammers at bay and facilitate Google maintain an edge over its competitors globally". Beware of SEOs that claim to guarantee rankings, allege a "special relationship" with Google, or advertise a "priority submit" to Google. There is no priority submit for Google. In fact, the only way to submit a site to Google directly is through our Add URL page or by submitting a Sitemap and you can do this yourself at no cost whatsoever. Search engine optimization is often about making small modifications to parts of your website. Even though this guide's title contains the words "search engine", we'd like to say that you should base your optimization decisions first and foremost on what's best for the visitors of your site.
