Robert's Perl Tutorial by Robert Pepper. Perl, or Practical Extraction and Reporting Language, is an open source programming language. It is often used for creating CGI programs and other web scripts. It was specifically designed for processing text. Of course Perl is still widely used for its original purpose: extracting data from one source and translating it to another format. This covers everything from processing and summarizing system logs, through manipulating databases, reformatting text files and simple search-and-replace operations. Perl even manages the data from Human Genome Project, a task requiring massive amounts of data manipulation. For system administrators, Perl is great for automating administration tasks, sending automatically generated mails and generally tidying up the system. It can produce reports on resource use and watch for security problems. There are also extensions that allow Perl to deal with the Windows registry and run as a Windows NT service. Robert's Perl Tutorial is a good starting point to learn Perl. This book is dated ( 1997, 1998, 1999 ), but it provides useful chapters. It is a basic Perl course primarily for use on Win32 platforms. What you need to know: You need to be able to differentiate between a PC and a toaster. No programming experience is necessary. You do need to understand the basics of PC operation. If you don't understand what directories and files are then you'll find this difficult. You might find it difficult even if you do :-) You do need to exercise the brain cells, and you need time.
