The Windows Automated Installation Kit ( Windows AIK ) Users' Guide helps you to install, customize, and deploy the supported Windows operating systems. This guide provides instructions on how to use the tools included in this kit. The tools in the AIK enable you to configure many deployment options, and they provide a high degree of flexibility. The core tools used in most Windows deployment scenarios are: Windows System Image Manager ( Windows SIM ), the tool used to open Windows images, create answer files ( some unattended installations can be driven by a script providing answers to the various choices such as the answer file ), and manage distribution shares ( a "distribution share" is an optional set of folders that contain files used to customize Windows through unattended answer files ) and configuration sets ( unattend.chm ); ImageX, the tool used to capture, create, modify, and apply Windows images; Deployment Image Servicing and Management ( DISM ), the tool used to apply updates, drivers, and language packs to a Windows image. DISM is available in all installations of Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 ( wimgapi.chm, Introduction to the Imaging APIs for Windows ); Windows Preinstallation Environment ( Windows PE, winpe.chm ), a minimal operating system environment used to deploy Windows. The AIK includes several tools used to build and configure Windows PE environments; Windows Setup, the tool used to install Windows ( this tool is included in the Windows product DVD and is not part of the AIK installation ); Sysprep, the tool used to prepare a Windows installation for imaging or delivery to a customer ( available in all Windows installations ); User State Migration Tool ( USMT, usmt.chm ), a tool used to migrate user data from a previous Windows operating system to Windows 7 ( USMT is installed as part of the AIK ).
